These findings establish the SMCs as four novel phenotypically and ecologically distinct species within a single novel genus, distinct from C. exile clade at the phylum level. By identifying the species diversity and abundance on a quadrat-transect system , I hope to find how vegetation differs across these ecosystems and how the mire may respond and evolve in terms of vegetation as permafrost thaw and climate change impact continue. This dataset provides measurements of the diffusive flux of methane (CH₄), a strong greenhouse gas, to the atmosphere from three subarctic lakes located on the Stordalen Mire in northern Sweden. We measured turbulence-driven diffusive fluxes of CH₄ with floating chambers during the ice-free seasons of 2010 to 2017, approximately every 1⁠ – ⁠2 weeks, from different locations in the lakes.

The two studied sites, Storflaket (Figure 1a) and the eastern Stordalen mire (Figure 1b) are situated about 3 km apart within a large palsa peat complex in the Stordalen valley (68°20′90'N, 18°58′57'E), northern Sweden. Storflaket is characterized by a peat palsa plateau with a fairly homogenous thickness of about 0.5 m.

Ebullition rates of gas bubbling from the lake sediments containing mostly CH₄ was measured with bubble traps during the ice-free seasons of 2009 to 2017. 2020-12-10 2021-03-17 2019-09-20 Previous research shows that the permafrost of the Stordalen mire has melted quickly over the last 30 years and that the mire emits an increasing amount of methane. Rhiannon Mondav, PhD student of limnology at Uppsala University, is part of the international research group which decided to look for methanogens in the mire. The IsoGenie Project is a Department of Energy (Genomic Science Program)-funded interdisciplinary investigation of how permafrost thaw, driven by a changing climate, is altering carbon cycling in Arctic peatlands.
